The annual Spicemas Carnival in Grenada

Spicemas is the annual carnival celebration of Grenada, and it’s one of the most vibrant and anticipated events in the Caribbean.

Spicemas is Grenada’s version of Carnival — a spectacular fusion of African, French, and Caribbean culture, featuring music, dance, costumes, and traditional folklore. It celebrates freedom, community, and national identity.

Spicemas builds up over several weeks with events throughout July and early August, culminating in the main Carnival days:

  • J’ouvert Morning (Monday): Street revelry starting at dawn with oil, paint, mud, and powder.

  • Pageant Monday: Traditional masquerade and fancy costume parades.

  • Carnival Tuesday: The grand parade with colourful bands and extravagant costumes.

Expect to enjoy a sense of the Grenadian community coming together for Music, costumes, competitions and Jab Jab, a uniquely Grenadian tradition where participants cover themselves in black oil or paint, wearing chains and horns to symbolise defiance and liberation.

Zara Tremlett comments, “The main events take place in St. George’s, Grenada’s capital — and Port Louis Marina is the prime location to berth your yacht to be close to all the action!”
